British Gypsum

Manufacturers of plasterboard
Product used: Scanning plasterboardSCAN_LASER 2060 fitted with SL1400 measurement heads
Application:
Dual scanning lasers measure the plasterboard as it traverses across rollers on the main flow line. The system measures width and edge angle using the 2060. Later in the process fixed SL1400 sensors are used to measurement the thickness profile and to detect surface defects caused by uneven drying of the paper layer.
Benefits:
  • Improved dimensional quality control
  • Material saving from closer control of thickness profile

Hodgson Sealants

Manufacturers of extruded sealant for the building trade
Product used: Hodgson extrusions on backing tapesSeven off SCAN_LASER 2020 systems fitted with SL1400 measurement heads
Application:
A scanning laser system is fitted to each of the seven extrusion lines. The laser is used to measure thickness profile and width of the sealant as it travels over a fixed anvil. The system provides a database of all sealant products so that the operator is able to make a simple selection in order to configure the measurement system with the required tolerances. In addition to the laser measurement an Infra red thermometer provides a thermal profile of the sealant as it exits the extruder.
Benefits:
  • Improved thickness control – important to ensure that the material fits within the packaging
  • Reduced start up time between product changes – the on-line measurement enables the operator to bring the line under control significantly faster

Kingspan

Manufacturer of metal clad building panels
Product used: production lineSCAN_LASER 2020 system fitted with SL1700 measurement head
Application:
A scanning laser is used to measure the pattern depth and symmetry of a metal panel immediately after a cold forming operation. The laser is scanned across the sheet as it moves along the flow line and generates alarms if the pattern depth moves out of tolerance. The system is configurable to measure any of the seven types of panel.
Benefits:
  • Enables on-line pattern measurement – previously no measurement was available
  • Reduced start up time between pattern changes – the on-line measurement enables the operator to bring the line under control significantly faster

Healthcare Products Manufacturer

Manufacture of extruded hydrocolloid glue for Ostomy products
Product used: 2010 SystemSCAN_LASER 2010 system fitted with SL2500 measurement head
Application:
A scanning laser micrometer is used to measure the thickness profile of extruded glue as it traverses a roller. Thickness profile is measured to better than 50 microns. An infra red sensor is also fitted to the measurement head and provides a thermal profile.
Benefits:
  • Hydrocolloid glue is expensive – the on-line measurement ensures tighter tolerance and therefore less product ‘giveaway’
  • Scanning measurement ensure consistent thickness profile which is an important quality aspect of the final Ostomy product
