SCADA & Automation
These applications were the starting point for the company in 1990. AIS has always been at the forefront of applying PCs for industrial control and display applications and brings application expertise as well as computing experience. AIS employs mechanical engineers, physicists, mathematicians – all of whom have solid industrial experience with in-depth programming and engineering experience.
Over the years the company has developed significant expertise in the development of real-time software for both PLCs and the Windows operating system and this has led to a diverse application experience – examples of some of the main sectors and projects are identified below:
Food Manufacturers
- Recipe management and PLC control systems for a powder drink and jelly production
- Systems that monitor production and calculate operational efficiency for an ice cream lines
Engineering Manufacturers
- Production test systems for fridge / freezer production lines
- Production schedule interface, batch logging and management reporting for a steel pipe manufacturer
Tunnels
- A ventilation safety control system (to BS EN 61508) for an airport railway tunnel
- A site wide SCADA and control system for a large road tunnel covering safety and operational systems
Infrastructure
- A building management system for a hospital
- A toll system for a road bridge in Southampton
- A monitoring system for a wind farm in Cornwall
In addition to the role of system integrators AIS also provides consultancy services to define requirements and write tender and performance specifications.
On-line Measurement & Gauging
AIS became involved in Laser Measurement in the early 1990s when a number of clients expressed interest in on-line measurement of the physical properties of their products.
The early applications used analog lasers – the first generation of products that provided the speed and accuracy required for monitoring the dimensions of products on flow lines. The first products to be measured included plasterboard and other building board products.
Since the early applications AIS have developed software and hardware products to support the building of these systems and have brought these developments together as a standard product – SCAN_LASER. This uses the latest digital laser gauges combined with standard software for measurement, display, batch logging and where required control.
Examples of some of the main sectors and projects that SCAN_LASER is used in are detailed below:
Plastics Extrusion
- Thickness and profile measurement of thin films used for food packaging
- Thickness and width measurement of extruded board used for signage applications
Glue and Sealant Extrusion
- Thickness profile and width measurement of hydrocolloid glue
- Thickness profile and width measurement of sealant products
Building Boards and Panels
- Width, edge angle and thickness profile measurement of plasterboard
- Thickness measurement of cement board
- Profile measurement of metal cladding panels
Laminates Production
- Depth measurement of etched lines with feedback control
- Thickness measurement of printed circuit boards (PCBs)
Paper and card production
- Depth measurement of corrugated filter paper
- Thickness profile measurement of finishing paper
